We've all had a good laugh at videos of animals running into glass doors, trying to jump over fences, or taking a tumble down the stairs. While these accidents can be entertaining to watch, they highlight the importance of animal chiropractic care.
Surprisingly, in the early 1900s, chiropractors were required to graduate from chiropractic school with the ability to adjust animals in addition to humans. This was because they used animals as patients to assess the effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments.
These adjustments were so successful in improving health and aiding in healing that animal chiropractic care became a norm. Nowadays, obtaining certification to practice animal chiropractic care requires specialized training, and both veterinarians and chiropractors can obtain it. Dr. Jackie Manfre received her certification from OPTIONS for ANIMALS in Wellsville, Kansas. Call Thrive Chiropractic for more details about our animal chiropractic services. Our animals have spines, just like us. This means they have a nervous system and electrochemical pathways that signal between our brain and body, just like us.
When these spinal pathways are interrupted by physical injury like falls physical abuse, or environmental stress like a stressful home, adoption process, or inadequate diet, the body becomes subluxated.
Subluxated is a long fancy chiropractic word that means the flow of proper central nervous system signaling is disrupted, and the body isn't regulating itself optimally.
An animal chiropractor is trained to help adjust the spine and restore nervous system function. This can help put your animal on the path to healing and health.
There doesn't need to be blatant abuse or injury to have your animal adjusted. Daily life has its way of accumulating micro-stresses in the body, and it's better to have them resolved before they become a larger disease pattern later in life.
When you bring your animal to see Dr. Jackie for a first appointment, her rule is to always see them again within 7-10 days to assess how their body received the adjustment and tailor the adjustment schedule directly to your animal.
How often depends on the goal. Is your animal healing an injury? Are they in training? Are they competition animals? Are they getting adjusted for proactive health? It all depends, but for general health, Dr. Jackie typically sees a dog every 4-6 weeks, a horse every 2-4 months, and a cat every 3 months.
Adjustments are safe, gentle, and effective. Usually by the second visit, once the animal associates adjustments with your chiropractor, they are very excited to get to the office or see the car coming up the drive.
Dr. Jackie's adjustments are especially gentle. She utilizes a framework of chiropractic adjusting called Bio-Geometric Integration or BGI to deliver very light, effective adjustments.
Dr. Jackie will give you specific post-adjustment recommendations to help maximize the effects of the adjustment, but generally, it is best to simply allow your animal to heal without much more than observing them. Here are Dr. Jackie's general signs your animal is in their healing process.
Post adjustment signs your animal is in an active healing/resetting process, and there's nothing to do but let them heal.
1. Wanting to drink more water.
2. Wanting to eat more food.
3. Playing more, running around more, in spurts of energy followed by extreme rest.
4. Sleeping/resting more.
5. Larger or more frequent bowel movement within 72 hours post adjustment.
All animals are different, but the things they have in common are; that they are nonverbal, intuitive beings, and lacking a limiting ego. This means the healing process is usually easeful and easy and we restore body flow and let nature do the rest.
Chiropractors who are trained in animal chiropractic are chiropractors first, which means they don't treat or diagnose injuries or diseases. Their job is to adjust the spine and restore nervous system flow.
It is best to defer to your veterinarian for diagnostic questions and treatment and defer to your animal chiropractor for ways to optimize the adjusting process.
